5. Western North Carolina Nature Center
The nature center is a living museum for plants and animals in the Appalachian region. They have events planned throughout the year and it is a great place for kids to learn and understand more about nature and their environments through hands-on and sensory programs.

6. Blue Ridge Parkway
Drive along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway and stop along the lookout to witness the marvelous beauty of mother nature at best. You can start from Asheville and drive all the way to the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountain Park.

Once you pay admission you get to play any game you want for free. It is a great deal to play a wide variety of vintage games. There are over 30 machines that range from the 1960’s to 2003 there are even a few novelty games you can play such as a rifle game and baseball game!

10. Chimney Rock Park
Enjoy NC’s newest State park at Chimney Rock Park. Go up to the top of the rock to enjoy the amazing, panoramic view. Family with small children don’t be afraid there is an elevator to take you up to the top within 30 seconds. For family with bigger kids and love the adventure, the Outcropping trail will take you there in about 20 minutes. There are several hiking trails for different preference. Great Woodland Adventure Trail and Hickory Nut Falls Trail are highly recommended for family hiking. A tip for family with small children, bring backpack carrier or rent one at the park for $8 as the trails are not suitable for stroller use.

11. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad
The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad is a perfect excursion for a visit to Asheville. Kids will enjoy scenic train journey through the Great Smoky Mountain. There are special train event throughout the year being the Thomas Train Ride, the Snoopy Easter ride or the Polar Express on Christmas.

13. Shindig on the Green
This FREE event happens almost every Saturday throughout the summer! You can bring instruments, lawn chairs, blankets, family, and friends and experience the beautiful music and dance traditions of the Southern Appalachia on a summer evening in the mountains!
Splashville is a popular fountain at the Pack Square Park. Kids of all ages love the park. With arching sprays of water that fly up randomly this is a perfect way to get soaked and cool off. Let the summer sun dry you off while relaxing on the rolling green field that the park provides. The fountain runs from 8 AM through 8 PM.
