This often-overlooked region offers unique attractions and landmarks that make for an unforgettable road trip. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for some offbeat adventures, the Midwest has something for everyone. 

Here’s a guide to some of the must-see roadside attractions and landmarks in each of the Midwest states.

Illinois

Known as the Land of Lincoln, Illinois, may conjure up images of deep-dish pizza and the vibrant city life in Chicago. But the state offers far more than that! Any road trip through the state would be incomplete without seeing: 

  • Route 66: Drive along the historic Route 66 and stop by the Pontiac Route 66 Museum
  • Cahokia Mounds: Explore this ancient Native American city near Collinsville.
  • Casey, Illinois: Casey, Illinois, is known for its collection of “Big Things in a Small Town”. Here you’ll find twelve “World’s Largest” items, including the world’s largest rocking chair, golf tee, and knitting needles.

Indiana

Known as the Crossroads of America, Indiana is famous for the Indianapolis 500 and its charming small towns. Any road trip through the state would be incomplete without seeing:

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Home of the Indy 500, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a must-see for racing fans. Even if there isn’t a race to watch, you can take a tour of the track any day of the year except Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Iowa

Known as the Hawkeye State, Iowa is celebrated for its expansive cornfields and historic sites. Be sure to check out the following when driving through: 

  • Field of Dreams Movie Site: Visit the baseball field from the iconic movie in Dyersville.
  • The Iowa State Fair: Held annually in Des Moines, the Iowa State Fair is one of the largest and most famous state fairs in the U.S.

Kansas

There’s no place like home! Kansas is known for its endless prairies and agricultural heritage, as well as being the legendary home of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Make sure your Kansas road trip includes:

Michigan

Minnesota

North Dakota
