There’s no better time than autumn to hit the road in your RV and embark on an unforgettable adventure. Whether you’re seeking the changing foliage of the Northeast, the crisp mountain air of the Rockies, or the cozy charm of small towns nestled amidst rolling hills, there’s a perfect autumn destination waiting to be discovered.

In this guide, we’ll dive into what you should consider when picking a fall RV destination and offer some of our favorite places to visit.

What to Consider When Camping in October and November

While planning an RV trip in the autumn is similar to planning one any other time of year, there are a few extra considerations to remember.

1. Consider crowds.

While crowds are generally smaller in the fall than in the peak summer months, some places see an influx of people in the fall or around certain autumn dates. Salem, Massachusetts, for example, sees its peak crowds in mid-to-late October.

If you’re a crowd-conscious traveler, do a little research on locations ahead of time.

2. Be aware of weather conditions and closures.

Destinations located at higher altitudes and in northern portions of the country may start to close during the fall months. For example, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed between October 15 and May 15. Isle Royale National Park in Michigan is closed annually from November 1 to April 15.

Before planning your trip, make sure that the places you want to visit will be open. It’s also a good idea to check road closures, as some places may be open with limited access.

3. Take advantage of fall foliage RVing and seasonal activities.

RV camping is fun any time of year, but if you’re going to be on the road from October through November, you should take advantage of the fun seasonal activities that autumn offers!

Be on the lookout for some of our favorite activities to check out wherever you go:

  • Leaf peeping: Fall foliage RVing is one of the quintessential autumn experiences! Plan scenic drives, hikes, or bike rides through areas known for their beautiful trees, such as national parks, state forests, or scenic byways.
  • Apple picking: Many orchards across the country offer apple-picking experiences during the fall months. Enjoy picking your apples straight from the tree and savor the taste of freshly harvested fruit.
  • Visiting pumpkin patches and fall festivals: Visit a local pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkins, explore corn mazes, take hayrides, and enjoy other festive activities.
  • Scenic train rides: Some areas offer scenic train rides that provide stunning views of fall foliage and landscapes.

Explore local attractions and seasonal events in the areas you plan to visit to make the most of your autumn adventure.

4. Book your stay ahead of time.

Some campgrounds may close or reduce their services during the fall months. Research the campgrounds you plan to visit to ensure they’re open and have the amenities you need.

Even if your choice campgrounds are open and full-service, it’s always a good idea to book ahead of time. Places can fill up quickly any time of year!

October is a great time of year to visit northern states that will be covered in snow by early winter. Enjoy comfortable temperatures, changing trees, and festive activities in these five best places to RV in October.

1. Yosemite National Park, California

Experience the beauty of Yosemite National Park in October as the peak summer season dwindles. With good weather and fewer crowds, you can explore iconic landmarks like Half Dome and El Capitan, drive along scenic roads, and hike the park’s 800+ miles of trails.

While Yosemite is not known for spectacular fall colors due to the evergreen trees, big-leaf maples, black oaks, Pacific dogwoods, and other deciduous trees tend to show off vibrant hues around mid-October.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

October transforms the Great Smoky Mountains into a vibrant tapestry of colors as the fall foliage reaches its peak. Immerse yourself in the splendor of nature as you hike along scenic trails and marvel at the panoramic vistas.

Plus, area towns like Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg have activities that are simply made for fall. From the famous Apple Barn to Dollywood to the Moonshine Mountain Coaster, you’ll find endless activities to keep you busy.

3. Colorado Springs, Colorado

October brings crisp air and clear skies to Colorado Springs, making it an ideal time to explore the city’s outdoor wonders. Hike among the fiery aspen trees in the nearby mountains, marvel at the towering sandstone formations of Garden of the Gods, and ride the cog railway to the top of Pikes Peak for breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.

4. New England

New England states are a leaf peeper’s dream destination.

In October, the charming towns and scenic landscapes of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine burst into a symphony of fall color. Take a leisurely drive along the winding country roads, visit quaint villages adorned with pumpkins and cornstalks, and indulge in freshly harvested apples and cider donuts at local orchards. For hiking and other outdoor recreation, be sure to visit Acadia National Park and White Mountain National Forest.
