With stunning scenery, hiking trails, and wildlife, Yosemite Valley is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. However, planning a Yosemite spring camping trip can be a challenging task, especially if it’s your first time.

From choosing the right campsite to packing the right gear, there are many factors to consider. Review our guide to see what you need to know about spring camping in Yosemite to make the most of your adventure.

Choose Your Campsite

Yosemite has many camping accommodations available, whether you prefer staying in a tent, RV, or cabin. We even have yurts! Some campsites are reservable in advance, while others are first-come, first-serve. Look for a Yosemite campground with amenities like showers, swimming pool, playground, and firepits to enhance your trip.

It’s important to note that some campgrounds are only open seasonally or may be closed for renovations, like Tuolumne Meadows Campground until 2024/2025. Make sure to do thorough research and make your reservations in advance to secure the best site and rates.

Pack Smart

Spring weather in Yosemite can be unpredictable, with daytime temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 70s and nighttime temperatures dropping into the 30s. Make sure to bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking shoes.

Also, remember to pack food, water, cooking supplies, a first-aid kit, medication, toiletries, blankets, flashlights, and extra batteries. If you’re staying at a pet-friendly campground, don’t forget to pack anything your pup needs to be safe and comfortable.

Plan Your Activities

Yosemite offers many things to do for spring campers. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails ranging from easy nature walks to strenuous incline hikes. Yosemite’s waterfalls are at their peak in the spring, so make sure to check out Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, and Vernal Fall for breathtaking views.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try rock climbing or horseback riding. And don’t forget to spend some time stargazing – Yosemite is one of the best places in the world for stargazing!

Follow Park Rules and Regulations

Yosemite National Park has rules and regulations in place to protect the park’s natural resources and wildlife. Make sure to follow all park rules, including keeping a safe distance from wildlife, properly disposing of trash, and using designated fire pits for campfires. Respect the natural beauty by leaving no trace and taking care not to damage the flora and fauna.

Bring Fire-Building Supplies

Making a fire is an essential part of camping, especially during the spring in Yosemite. Nights can get chilly, and having a crackling fire to keep you warm is not only comforting but also necessary for survival. Bring all the supplies you need to build a good fire, like firewood, kindling, lighter fluid, and matches or lighter.

Attend Ranger-Led Programs

When camping in Yosemite, visitors can learn more about the incredible wildlife, geology, and history of the park by attending ranger-led programs. Check out their calendar of programs scheduled throughout the year, which provide an educational and fun experience for all ages.

Watch for Wildlife

While spending time in the park, you may encounter some of its more well-known inhabitants—bears, mountain lions, and deer. Although these animals are fascinating to observe, visitors must be aware of the potential danger they can pose. Make sure to properly store your food and follow safety guidelines if you encounter any animals.

Pause and Enjoy the Scenery

Yosemite is known for its stunning natural beauty, and spring is a great time to see the park come to life. Take time to appreciate the scenery, from the rushing waterfalls and the blooming wildflowers to the amazing views of El Capitan and Half Dome. Remember, these are memories that will last a lifetime.
